Fish farming and lettuce from Hillwood Kutno
Plantlab will set up one of the most advanced aquaponic installations in Europe in the Hillwood Kutno logistics centre (around 60 km north of Łódź) for the production of Romaine lettuce and for breeding sturgeon. Aquaponics is the use of hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil) with complementary fish farming and is more commonly used in the US and Asia. Crops are to be grown on eleven levels over an area of 4,600 sqm while the fish are to be kept in 900 cubic metre tanks. The installation is expected to produce 545,000 heads of lettuce and 4.8 tons of fish a month. The centre is being financed by the National Research and Development Centre and is a joint development of the Horticultural Institute in Skierniewice and the Institute of Ichthyology and Aquaculture in Gołysz. Plantlab has leased 2,700 sqm in the logistics centre, which comprises a single class A building of 32,600 sqm. The centre is located next to the Kutno junction on the A1 motorway around 10 minutes from the interchange with the A2 motorway. In the Central Poland area, Hillwood also has properties in Łódź and Stryków and it also has new centres planned in Zgierz, Rawa Mazowiecka and nearby Łowicz.
