Lithium-Ion battery plant to be built in Gdańsk in USD 200 mln investment
Swedish lithium-ion battery producer Northvolt will invest USD 200 mln in a factory in Gdańsk. Preparations to build the 50,000 sq m plant are already underway and construction work on the first stage is to start in the autumn.
On completion of the first stage, the factory will produce batteries capable of producing 5 GWh annually and production is scheduled to start in 2022. After the completion of the second stage the production capacity should increase to 12 GWh. Together with the R&D centre that is to be built as part of the second stage, the project will eventually result in the creation of 500 jobs.
Northvolt is to provide the battery components from its Swedish factory in Skellefteå. This is not the first investment by Northvolt in Poland. Three years ago, the company opened a factory in Gdańsk on ul. Elbląska within an industrial park owned by Panattoni.
Northvolt, which is a company with factories in Sweden and Germany, was founded in 2016. It supplies car battery systems to automotive concerns including ABB, BMW Group, Scania, Siemens, Vattenfall, Vestas and the Volkswagen Group. The CEO and co-founder of the company is former vice president of Tesla Motors Peter Carlsson.
